Statement by H.E. Ambassador Ertuğrul Apakan, Permanent Representative of Turkey, at the Executive Board Meetiıng of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS Annual Session 2011

Ertuğrul Apakan 06.06.2011
Madame President,
Mr. Executive Director,
Distinguished Colleagues,

At the outset, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin for his comprehensive and insightful presentation at the opening of this segment. We are confident that UNFPA will benefit from his extensive knowledge and experience, as well as his dedication to the agenda of the UNFPA. His leadership will be particularly important at this stage when we are striving to carry the ICPD agenda forward. Turkey fully supports the forward looking vision he has portrayed for the UNFPA.

Madame President,

Despite considerable progress with respect to the implementation of the ICPD agenda, challenges remain in fully meeting the targets set out in Cairo. There is still poverty, sexual violence, gender based discrimination, girls with no access to education, women without access to modern contraceptives in many countries around the world today. These challenges are particularly aggravated in the least developed countries, due to the lack of adequate financial resources, technical capacity and institutions. The Fourth UN Conference on the LDCs in Istanbul in May gave us an opportunity to discuss these challenges in depth and to adopt concrete measures with respect to poverty eradication, health, and education, among others. Turkey is committed to the agenda put forward by the Istanbul Programme of Action in order to continue to mobilize the international community in support of the LDCs, in full cooperation with all relevant UN agencies. We are counting on UNFPA’s support in this regard. We are also pleased to have the joint thematic discussion on the LDCs during this session of the UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS Executive Board.

Madame President,

I would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Thea Fierens, Regional Director of the UNFPA Eastern European and Central Asian Office in Istanbul, for her collaboration in realizing the relocation of the Regional Office to Istanbul. The official opening of the Regional Office took place on the occasion of the Foruth UN Conference on the LDCs, as mentioned by the Executive Director. I would like to assure you that the Turkish Government will continue provide the necessary support for the Regional Office.

Thank you.
