Thank you Mr. President,

At the outset, I would like to thank the Secretary-General for his comprehensive report, Special Representative Mr. Nicholas Haysom for his briefing and Ambassador Mahmoud Saikal for his statement.

The resolution renewing the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) arrives timely, when change and transformation dominate the agenda of Afghanistan. We welcome the role assumed by UNAMA in assisting the Afghan people for achieving a bright future. We will continue to support UNAMA’s activities and efforts in this regard.

Mr. President,

2015 has marked an important year in Afghanistan. The Afghan National Unity Government, which we consider as the symbol of Afghans’ unity, completed its first year in power. During this period, the National Unity Government has undertaken important reforms in various fields from good governance to drug-trafficking, economy to anti-corruption.

Although opposition is an integral part of political life in any democratic country, we believe that criticism should not be detrimental to the endeavors of the National Unity Government. International community should continue to support the efforts of the National Unity Government towards bringing security, development and prosperity to Afghanistan.

15 months ago Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) assumed full security responsibility of their country. While the current security situation continues to be fragile and the increasing number of civilian causalities is an issue of concern, ANDSF are resolutely defending their homeland against any threat. We believe that ANDSF will be more successful on the basis of this year’s experience in parallel to overcoming its shortcomings.

Mr. President,

The Parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to take place this October will strengthen and advance democratic institutions and traditions in Afghanistan.

For a lasting peace in Afghanistan and regional stability, the successful conclusion of the Peace and Reconciliation Process is vital. We welcome and support the recent initiatives to that end, commend the facilitating role by the neighboring countries in this respect and stand ready to contribute if any need arises. I would like to emphasize the following three points in this regard:

i) We hope that all parties contribute to the efforts of strengthening peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan and in the region.
ii) Armed struggle against the Afghan State and people is ended.
iii) Reconciliation is ensured through negotiations.

I would also like to underline that Turkey will continue to support the Afghan Government’s struggle against terrorism.

Mr. President,

We welcome various initiatives and projects of connectivity and cooperation among neighboring countries. We believe that these initiatives not only help Afghanistan to achieve a successfully functioning economy but also play a key role in the realization of major regional infrastructure projects.

I would like to reiterate once again that in order to continue to build on the achievements of the last 14 years, the international community’s continuing support to Afghanistan, during the “Transformation Decade” is of utmost importance.

Before concluding, I would like to underline that Turkey will continue to support Afghanistan’s security and development efforts on bilateral level and the multilateral platforms, and stand by her Afghan brothers as long as her help is needed.

Thank you.
