Statement by H.E. Halit Çevik, Permanent Representative of Turkey, at the Second Regular Session of UN WOMEN Executive Board of 2012

Halit Çevik 28.11.2012
Mr. President,

It is a pleasure for me to address the Second Regular Session of the UN WOMEN Executive Board this year. I would like to congratulate you and other members of the Bureau on your able work. I would also like to express our gratitude to the Under Secretary-General/Executive Director Madam Michelle Bachelet and her team for their vision and hard work.

It has been almost two years since UN WOMEN became operational. In this short period and with limited resources, it has achieved remarkable progress in terms of both the institutional set up of a new organization and the execution of its substantive mandate. And it has done so by working in close consultation and transparency with member states. We commend UN WOMEN for this success and trust that it will continue in the same direction.

As this is the first paper-smart session of the Executive Board, we also welcome this environment-friendly initiative.

Turkey is deeply committed to gender equality and empowerment of women. We share the vision and priorities of UN WOMEN. I would like to take this opportunity to assure UN WOMEN of Turkey’s steadfast support to its work. We have pledged to increase our contribution to its budget to 1 million USD in 2013. We also stand ready to provide all the necessary assistance for the establishment of its Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia.

Thank you Mr. President.
