STATEMENT MADE BY TURKEY ON 27 MAY 2005 AT THE PLENARY OF THE NPT 2005 REVIEW CONFERENCE

-- 27.05.2005
Mr. President,

At the outset let me express on behalf of my delegation our profound gratitude for your commendable leadership in steering this body. We fully appreciate your efforts. We also wish to thank the Chairs of all Committees, Subsidiary Bodies and the Secretariat for their untiring efforts. Our thanks equally go to civil society institutions which have vigilantly followed the work of the Conference from its early days and made extremely useful contributions both before and at the Review Conference.

Mr. President,

My delegation has subscribed to the statement delivered by the distinguished Ambassador of Luxemburg, on behalf of the European Union. Yet, we also wished to take the floor to express our national feelings on the outcome of the 2005 Review Conference. It is a source of great disappointment for my country that the Conference has not been able to produce a substantial outcome. Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to address the current challenges towards the NPT. We missed the opportunity to restore the relevance of the Treaty to the realities of our world. We hope that the experience that we had over the last month, will not be a precedent for the upcoming Review Conferences and their preparatory meetings.

Mr. President,

In our opinion, NPT is still a unique and irreplaceable multilateral instrument which should continue to play a vital role. Despite this negative outcome today, we should continue to support the NPT regime and exert every effort to protect its integrity and credibility.

My Government will spare no effort to work towards this direction.

Thank you, Mr. President.
