Statement by H.E. Ambassador Baki İlkin, Permanent Representative of Turkey to the UN, at the Launch of the Peacebuilding Fund

Baki İlkin 11.10.2006
Madame Chairperson,

At the outset let me congratulate you upon assumption of your new, yet critical and challenging post.

I wish you every success and assure you of my delegation's full support in your endeavours.

Taking this opportunity, let me also pay a heartfelt tribute to our distinguished Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan and our previous General Assembly President, Mr. Elliasson.

Their role was indispensable and instrumental in leading us to the establishment of the Peace Building Commission. This new UN body could not have been initiated without their strong determination and active support.

Madame Chairperson,

Peace Building Commission will provide more sustained, coordinated and focused support to countries emerging from conflict. Yet we all know that the success of the PBC is also very much dependent on securing a sound financial support to its Fund. This Fund should be able to ensure immediate release of resources needed to launch peacebuilding activities, particularly in the African Continent.

Recognizing its critical importance Turkey has already made a voluntary contribution of 800.000 USD to the Peacebuilding is Fund for this year. Although not yet a member of the Organizational Committee, Turkey will continue to give full support to the activities of the PBC and its Fund.

Furthermore Peacebuilding will continue to be one of the 5 major areas of interest and priority for Turkey, if it is elected to the Security Council for the term 2009-2010.
