Statement by H.E. Ambassador Rafet Akgünay Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkey at the High-Level Meeting on the Tenth Anniversary of Chemical Weapons Convention

Rafet Akgünay 27.09.2007
Distinguished Ministers
Mr. Director-General,
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to thank the Netherlands and Poland for convening this meeting on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

If we are to successfully reduce the threat from the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction- whether biological, chemical, radiological or nuclear - we must work together to ensure the traditional disarmament and non-proliferation regimes remain rigorous, effective, and relevant in the new circumstances of the twenty-first century.

In this context, the CWC plays a crucial role. The task of ridding the world from chemical weapons and ensuring that these do not threaten human lives again, demands full international cooperation and commitment.

Turkey is therefore fully committed for the effective implementation of the CWC and will continue to cooperate with the States Parties and the CWC Secretariat.

The universality of the convention is fundamental to the achievement of its objective and purpose.

Turkey therefore particularly supports the efforts to promote the universality of the CWC in the Mediterranean Basin, the Middle East, and neighboring regions.

As for the implementation of the CWC, Turkey would like to underline the importance of the compliance by the States Parties to the deadlines established for the verifiable destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles.

Last but not least, I would like to congratulate the Director-General, Mr. Pfirter and his team for immensely contributing to the successful activities of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Thank you.
