Bilge Koçyiğit Grba 12.02.2019
Madam President,

At the outset, I would like to extend our congratulations to you for your election as the President of the Executive Board.

You and your Bureau can be assured of my delegation’s full support in carrying out your important task.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you as well as the Executive Director of UN Women (Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka) for your comprehensive presentations this morning.

We also welcome the briefing on the progress on the implementation of General Assembly Resolution 72/279, which we fully support.

Madam President,

Turkey is strongly committed to the goals of improving the living standards and rights of women and girls and ensuring their full and equal participation in all spheres of life.

With this understanding, we will continue to contribute to the efforts of UN Women, including by closely following the implementation of the Entity’s Strategic Plan for the years 2018 - 2021.

It is also a great pleasure for Turkey to host UN Women’s Europe and Central Asia Regional Office in Istanbul. We enjoy a sound relationship with UN Women in Turkey and collaborate on several important issues.

Madam President,

We are pleased to see that, established merely 9 years ago, UN Women is now significantly contributing to gender mainstreaming throughout the UN system.

We commend UN Women’s contribution to the integration of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the work and priorities of the UN Development System.

We also appreciate the ongoing work to implement key adaptations required in UN Women’s structure and business processes in response to the repositioning of UN Development System.

As a member of the Group of Friends of Gender Parity, we welcome the fact that gender parity was attained among Resident Coordinators for the first time in 2018. This is yet another achievement of the Secretary General’s commitment to gender parity within the UN system.

Madam President,

We look forward to the 63rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women that will be held next month.

Turkey plans to attend the Session with a high-level delegation.

During this session, we hope to engage in in-depth discussions on the important role of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for the empowerment of women and girls.

Madam President,

In concluding, I would like reiterate that Turkey looks forward to constructively engaging in the work of the UN Women Executive Board in the present session as well as the subsequent Annual and Regular sessions throughout the year.

Thank you.
