Statement by H.E. Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations at the Special Event on the occasion of the “International Day of Nowruz”

Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu 21.03.2017
Mr. President,
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to welcome you all to our annual Nevruz ceremony, which we jointly organize since the declaration of 21st March as the “International Day of Nowruz” by the General Assembly in 2010.

I wish a happy Nevruz to you all.

Nevruz is an ancient festivity dating back to over 3000 years and celebrated by diverse communities from Central and South Asia to the Balkans.
This celebration transcends national, religious, cultural and linguistic boundaries. The values enshrined in Nevruz are solidarity, mutual understanding and respect.
In this regard, besides bringing together millions, it stands as an inspiration for peace in today’s world, plagued with numerous conflicts and instability.
Nevruz marks the beginning of the New Year and represents the indispensable link between the human beings and the nature. Therefore, it is very much related to the main motives behind the Sustainable Development Goals as well.

Distinguished guests,

Nevruz has been celebrated by the Turks for a long time. It appears even in the ancient twelve animal cycle Turkish calendar, which we used before we migrated to Anatolia. Throughout centuries, Turkish Nevruz celebrations in Anatolia were enriched by the inclusion of the local traditions of their “atayurt”, fatherland.
This event, as well as our joint application in 2009 to UNESCO for adding Nevruz in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is a clear message for peace, inclusiveness and human solidarity.
I would like to thank you for participating in this event, embracing the values of this ancient tradition and celebrating with us.

I wish you all a joyful Nevruz. Nevruz mubarek.
