Statement by Mr. Fazlı Çorman, Deputy Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations, at the Informal Meeting of the General Assembly on the International Day Against Nuclear Tests

Fazlı Çorman 09.09.2010
Madam President,

Let me also begin by thanking you for organizing this informal General Assembly meeting. I would also like to congratulate the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan for taking the initiative last year that led to the declaration of 29 August as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. Turkey lent its full support to this initiative from the very outset and we are pleased to see such high-level participation in today’s meeting. Let me also extend a warm welcome to the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Kairat Umarov.

Madam President,

Turkey recognizes that the cessation of all nuclear weapon test explosions constitutes an indispensable measure of both nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. In this regard, we stress the crucial role of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in achieving the objectives pertaining to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Taking this opportunity, we would like to once again call for the early entry into force of this Treaty.

It is our sincere hope that the International Day Against Nuclear Tests will be instrumental in raising awareness about the effects of nuclear explosions and orchestrating our efforts aimed at making concrete, verifiable and irreversible progress towards a world free of nuclear weapons.

Thank you, Madam President.
